Verified facts

  • Phishing emails to employees and agents of two U.S.-based internet companies redirected payments owed to a real Asian hardware maker into look-alike-company accounts in Latvia and Cyprus. The companies wired over $120 million in total.1
  • He also had forged invoices, contracts, and letters bearing fake corporate stamps of the Victim Companies submitted to banks to support the transfers.1
  • Ordered to forfeit $49,738,559.41 and pay $26,479,079.24 in restitution.1

Editorial notes

  • DOJ does not name the victim companies ("a multinational technology company and a multinational online social media company"). Neither does this site.
